MV-37

The NY DMV MV-37 form, titled Statement of Abandoned Vehicle, is a legal document used by property owners to transfer ownership of an abandoned vehicle to a registered vehicle dismantler or itinerant vehicle collector. This process is governed by Section 1224 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law and is specifically designed for vehicles that are at least ten model years old, have a wholesale value of $1,250 or less, and have been left on the property for at least one month. By using this form, the property owner certifies that the vehicle meets these criteria and that the original owner cannot be located, effectively allowing for the disposal of the vehicle without a standard title or registration transfer.

The form requires detailed information, including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a description of the vehicle (year, make, model, color), the location of abandonment, and the identities of both the property owner and the acquiring dismantler. Crucially, vehicles transferred via an MV-37 are classified as "junk and salvage" and can never be titled or registered for road use again; they must be dismantled or scrapped. Completed forms, accompanied by a VIN tracing and relevant salvage documentation (MV-907A), must be submitted to the DMV Junk and Salvage Unit by the dismantler within 15 days of acquisition.
